Kaiping Diaolou and Villages were inscribed as a World Cultural Heritage site in 2007.
 
Located in Jiangmen, Guangdong province, in the southwestern part of the Pearl River Delta, adjacent to Hong Kong and Macao, the Kaiping Diaolou and Villages originated in the late Ming Dynasty and flourished in the early 20th century. There are currently 1833 well-preserved Diaolou, multi-storeyed defensive village houses, each with its unique architectural style, rarely repeating patterns. These structures integrate residential, defensive against bandits, and flood control functions, blending Chinese and Western architectural styles. They represent a distinctive type of rural architecture in China.
 
The property serves as a testament to the local political, economic, and cultural development, embodying the culture of overseas Chinese. Additionally, they function as vibrant museums of modern architecture, forming a unique and artistic corridor in the region.
